Hey there! I hope you had a great weekend! We had a couple of warmer days so I got busy working on this DIY I’ve been meaning to get to for a while. When we remodeled our laundry room, which you can read about here, we had four leftover cabinet doors that we didn’t need anymore. Today I’m going to share what I did with three of them. I have a plan for the fourth door that I’ll share in a later post!

There are so many things you can do with leftover cabinet doors and I’m excited to share these ideas with you today! This project only cost about $5 because I already had all of the supplies except for a basket I needed for one of the doors.

I started by laying the doors out and deciding on paint colors. Then I wiped them down with a damp cloth to get rid of any dirt or dust and dried them off.
Door #1 – Chalkboard
For this first door, I decided I wanted a chalkboard. I settled on painting the inlaid panel with chalkboard paint and the border with antique white chalk paint.
It took about three layers of chalkboard paint with plenty of dry time in between coats. The border took two coats.
When the chalkboard paint was completely dry, I seasoned it. If you’ve ever had a new chalkboard, you may have noticed that after writing on it the first time it was hard to fully erase it. Chalkboards are porous and if they aren’t seasoned, it may be almost impossible to completely erase them as it seeps down in the pores. I’ve noticed this with the chalkboard paint, as well.
Seasoning your chalkboard is easy! All you need is a piece of chalk and a rag or paper towel. Lay the chalk on its side and cover the chalkboard with the chalk. Take your towel and rub in the chalk and then wipe it clean. That’s it! Now you have a seasoned chalkboard, ready to use.
Door #2 – Serving Tray
This was probably my favorite one, although, I was pleased with how they all turned out! I painted this door with Valspar’s Furniture Paint, you can read my review on this awesome paint here! I had them mix in Perpetual Gray by Sherwin Williams.
After giving the door two coats of paint and allowing it to completely dry, we added these vintage pulls that I already had on hand. They were perfect for this project!
Door #3 – Hanging File Basket
For the last door, I purchased a basket from Hobby Lobby. After giving the door a couple of coats of antique white chalk paint and letting it fully dry, I took my little sander and lightly distressed the edges. Then my hubby screwed the basket to the door. I added a knob that I already had on hand to give it some character.
It’s perfect for storing notebooks, mail, or file folders!
Easy and Inexpensive!
This was a fun project that took very little time and money and now these old cabinet doors have become useful household items!
I look forward to sharing with you my plan for the fourth door soon!
