I came across this toffee cake several years ago, but it had a different name that was a little embarrassing if you want to take it to a church potluck or a work function.
That name, you ask? Better than Sex. Yup. That’s what it was called. Sooo, I thought I better come up with something else before someone asked me and I turned all shades of red as I served them up a slice. I’ve also since heard it called a poke cake.
This cake really is so simple. For a somewhat healthier version (I mean it’s cake so who are we kidding?) you can make your own cake batter, caramel, and whipped topping from scratch. And I would love to try that soon. But this time I just used store-bought.
Caramel German Chocolate Toffee Cake
You start with a German Chocolate cake for the base. If using a box mix, follow the directions and baking times accordingly. Once the cake has cooled, use the end of a wooden spoon to poke holes across the top.
Drizzle your caramel topping (I just buy Hershey’s caramel sundae topping in the jar) over the top of the cake, letting it soak into the holes.
Frost the cake with Cool Whip. This recipe boasts a crumbled toffee topping, which I love because I love Heath bars! You can buy it already crushed in a package at the store where they keep the chocolate chips. Sprinkle it over the top of the Cool Whip and get ready to enjoy!
Aren’t those jade plates by Pioneer Woman so pretty? You can find them here!
