Have you seen the recent advertisements for grocery delivery in your area? Have you wondered if it’s worth it? Let’s talk!
Online Ordering and Pick-Up
Online grocery shopping has taken off in the last couple of years! You can save a lot of time shopping online and picking up your order. There are many other benefits, as well, like avoiding the crowds and not having to stand in long lines. Many stores have apps that you can order through, as well.
Some grocery stores charge for this convenience and others just have a minimum you have to spend. When we lived in Omaha, one of the first stores to offer this service was Baker’s, who is part of the Kroger family. They charged $4.95, but they allowed you to use coupons. Shortly after, Wal-Mart started offering the same service for free, but you couldn’t use coupons.
Around the same time, Hy-Vee started offering grocery delivery. There was a $100 minimum and they charged a small fee to deliver them to your home. Hy-Vee has always been a little higher in price than other stores so I never used this service. We did use the pick-up service at Baker’s and Wal-Mart and continued to use it at Wal-Mart when we moved to Oklahoma.
I love using this service for several reasons. I have never really enjoyed grocery shopping so being able to avoid that chore was amazing. We have three kids and by ordering online and picking it up, I was able to avoid taking them in with me and hearing the inevitable, “Mom, can we get this?!”
Aldi with Instacart
In our new home, we have an Aldi just around the corner. I love Aldi because they’re so affordable so I had gone back to doing a lot of shopping in the store to save money. But recently they started offering grocery delivery through Instacart. I decided to check it out!
Our first delivery was free! I ordered online, selected my time, and they showed up at the door in a timely manner. We were very impressed! After the initial delivery, the delivery fee was $3.99. That’s not so bad, but then they add a $3.50 service fee and a tip for the driver so it ended up being closer to $11.50 when it was all said and done. You can sign up for Instacart Express for $99/yr. and avoid the $3.99 delivery fee, but you’ll still pay the service fee and tip.
Our local Wal-Mart just started offering delivery, as well. They are offering this service for $9.95. For a period, they were offering it for free with a code and so we tried it out, as well. My only complaint was that the produce wasn’t always fresh, but I was able to email customer service and they gave us a refund.
UPDATE: Target with Shipt
Since writing this post, I’ve also tried out Target’s delivery through Shipt. They gave us a one month free trial. As far as delivery goes, this one is my favorite. The produce is always fresh and they’re always on time if not a little early.
The shopper texts you as soon as they’re starting the order and you are able to respond with any changes or additions you want to make. They always tell me if something is out of stock and ask what I would like to replace it with. Or if the produce selection is looking questionable, they shoot me a picture and I can decide whether I want it or not.
At Mother’s Day, Shipt offered a special where you could purchase a one-year membership for $50. This covered the fee for any delivery $35 or more. We did the math and if we just used it twice a month that made it only $2 per delivery. We knew we’d use it enough to make it worth it so we purchased the membership.
So is it worth it?
This is definitely something you have to weigh for your specific situation. For us, my husband and I both work full-time outside the home. All three of our kids are in school and involved in activities. My husband coaches middle school baseball and our oldest plays competitive baseball on a traveling team during the spring and summer. Our younger two are starting to be involved in activities, as well. We are involved in our church and stay busy with family. Not to mention keeping up with laundry and dishes and homework!
To be able to quickly order my groceries online and have them show up at my door is a HUGE convenience. While waiting for my son’s basketball game to start the other night I opened my Wal-Mart Grocery app, added my items to the cart and scheduled it to be delivered the following day. I sat back and enjoyed the game and the next afternoon our order was delivered accurately and on time.
The app also stores your favorites, the items you frequently order. This makes ordering even faster.
To us, paying the $10 delivery fee is worth it when we have a lot going on. It’s worth the time we save and takes a big item off our weekly to-do list. Plus, since I started ordering online, we’ve saved a ton of money from not adding those tempting end-cap sale items and other junk we don’t need to the cart. So we’re more than making up for the $10 we’re paying for the convenience of grocery delivery.
Try it out!
If you’ve been wondering whether having your groceries delivered is worth it or not, I hope this has been helpful!
