You will LOVE Valspar’s Chalk Paint!
Hey friend! How are you doing? I pray you are staying safe and healthy! This is a strange time we find ourselves in, but I’m choosing to be thankful that I have this extra time with my family. What are you thankful for?
Last week was spring break and now we’re out of school for at least the next two weeks so we have a lot of free time to complete some projects!
One project we were able to get to was giving our cedar chest a makeover. It was a wedding gift and has been through several moves so besides being outdated, it had also seen better days.
I decided to use one of my favorite chalk paints, Valspar Chalky Finish Paint, for this project.
If you’ve been around for a while, you’ll remember this tutorial I wrote on how to paint with chalk paint.
I also wrote this post on the different brands of chalk paint.
But today I want to focus on Valspar’s chalk paint. I’ve been using this paint for around five years now and I love it. I’d like to cover some common questions about Valspar chalk paint so you can feel confident in using it on your next project!
Is Valspar Chalky Finish Paint GOOD paint?
Valspar’s chalk paint is some of the best I’ve come across. It goes on smoothly and covers well. It holds up well, too. I have three kids and dog who are pretty hard on furniture and it has weathered well on all my pieces.
How do you Use Valspar Chalk Paint?
Using a high-quality brush, brush on a thin, even coat of the paint on your project. Allow it to fully dry.
If you like a smoother finish, lightly sand with steel wool before applying a second coat. If you like more texture to your finish, don’t sand in between coats. Allow the second coat to dry.
If you prefer, you can add another coat of paint. If you plan on distressing your piece, you can do that after the paint is fully dry.
How Many Coats Does it Valspar Chalky Paint Require?
This is really up to you. I typically only do two coats. I like the vintage look it gives the piece of furniture with two coats. If you’re going for more of a modern feel, I would use three or four for full coverage.
How Long Does it Take for Valspar Chalk Paint to Dry?
It depends on the humidity, but one of the best features of this paint is that it dries super fast. I’m usually able to recoat in 15-20 minutes.
How Do I Seal Valspar Chalky Finish Paint?
Valspar Sealing Wax is the perfect finish for your project! I love their sealing wax. You apply it with a brush and wipe it off with a lint-free cloth. It gives it a velvety finish with a slight sheen.
They also offer an antiquing was if you’d like to give your piece an aged look!
What Colors Does Valspar Chalk Paint Come In?
Valspar offers a wide variety of colors for their chalky finish paint. My favorites are Her Dainties, Beaded Reticule, and Boot Black.
Where Can I Purchase Valspar Chalk Paint?
Valspar Chalky Finish Paint is available at Lowe’s! It typically runs around $25 for a 30 oz. can and will do several projects!
I truly believe you will love this paint!
Cedar Chest Makeover
Now on to our cedar chest! Here is what it looked like before. This thing is a beast to move so instead of hauling it outside and back in, we just laid down a sheet and painted it in the living room.
I decided to use this opportunity to teach my two younger kiddos how to paint furniture! We each grabbed a brush and after giving instructions, I assigned them a section. Then we got to work!
Here’s what it looked like after the first coat:
And this is after the second coat. I usually don’t paint over the hardware, but I thought it would look pretty on this piece. I was happy with the look after two coats so I gave it a light distressing using fine sandpaper
And here is the after! I love how it turned out, such a dramatic change! It looks more feminine to me now with a light and airy feel!
This piece had been in our office storing papers and such but we cleaned it out and moved it to our living room to hold all of our blankets and throws. It will be super nice to have them stored where the dog can’t lay all over them and shed! Ugh!
If you have any questions about Valspar Chalk Paint that I didn’t answer, please feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email! I’ll be happy to help!
Stay safe and healthy out there! I’ll be sharing our home office redo later this week along with the table my hubby built for the space!
